I was delighted to again have a chance to chat with psychologist Bronwyn Milkins, host of the Mental Work podcast, about my lived experience of and subsequent research into burnout. Given the focus of the show, we focused on how mental health professionals can effectively diagnose and support clients with burnout. We discuss such issues as:
- What the early signs of burnout look like,
- What cynicism really looks like in burnout and why it becomes a barrier to recovery,
- The role of moral injury and values misalignment in driving burnout,
- Practical strategies to help clients re-engage with positive experiences and shift attention away from negative bias,
- How to work with clients when their workplace really is toxic (and not just perceived that way), and
- How to support clients through shame, frustration, and the feeling of “failing” at recovery.
